Frequently asked questions

How do I install the app?

Mount the image, drag the app into the "Applications" folder and launch it. If the system blocks the launch, allow it in "System Settings → Privacy & Security".

The app is damaged or won't launch

Reinstalling from a fresh image usually helps. Make sure your macOS version matches the one listed in the compatibility specs.

How do I update?

Download the new version from the site and install it over the current one — your settings will be preserved.

The download link doesn't work

Try a mirror or a download manager. For large files the browser often drops the connection.

How do I completely remove the app?

Use an uninstaller utility — it cleans up the service files that remain after moving the app to the trash.

  1. How to Install and Activate Parallels Desktop 20

    Step 1: Install Parallels Desktop
    1. Download Parallels Desktop.
    2. Sign out of your Parallels account completely.
    3. Open Terminal and run the following command to set permissions and install:
    chmod +x install.sh && chmod +x Launch\ Parallels.command && sudo ./install.sh
    4. Double-click the Launch Parallels.command file to start the app.

(Note: You will always need to use this launcher to prevent signature errors. If you are a developer with com.apple.vm.* permissions or are willing to disable System Integrity Protection, there are other workarounds available.)

    Step 2: Troubleshooting Common Errors
    * “Operation not permitted” Error: Go to System Settings ▸ Privacy & Security ▸ Full Disk Access and enable access for Terminal.
    * “Codesign error”: Make sure Xcode Command Line Tools are installed. Run xcode-select --install in Terminal. Check the installation with xcode-select -p.

Step 3: Block Parallels Servers (Hosts File)
To keep the app working, you need to block its servers. Add the following lines to your /etc/hosts file:

    127.0.0.1 download.parallels.com
    127.0.0.1 update.parallels.com
    127.0.0.1 desktop.parallels.com
    127.0.0.1 download.parallels.com.cdn.cloudflare.net

Important: Parallels will try to uncomment these lines automatically. You must lock your hosts file to prevent this. Run this in Terminal:
sudo chflags uchg /etc/hosts && sudo chflags schg /etc/hosts

(To unlock it later, use: sudo chflags nouchg /etc/hosts && sudo chflags noschg /etc/hosts)

    Step 4: Downloading Operating Systems
Because you blocked the servers, you won’t be able to download new OS images directly in the Control Center. If you need to download an OS, temporarily comment out these specific lines in your hosts file by adding a #:

    # 127.0.0.1 download.parallels.com
    # 127.0.0.1 desktop.parallels.com
    # 127.0.0.1 download.parallels.com.cdn.cloudflare.net
    # 127.0.0.1 desktop.parallels.com.cdn.cloudflare.net

Once your download is finished, remember to remove the # to block them again!
